In March 2021, we ran 3 Zones in I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here.

Each ran for 4 weeks, from 1 to 26 March.

Throughout the month students voted for their favourite scientist. At the end of each Zone, the scientist with the most votes was crowned the winner. They will receive £500 to spend on further public engagement activities.

The Pink Zone was part-funded by the Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC).

It featured 27 scientists from a broad range of fields. 5 of these were either funded by STFC, or worked at, or used data from, an STFC facility.

Throughout April 2021, students can connect with scientists in the Red Zone. Students can Ask questions, Chat to them, and Vote for their favourite to win a £500 prize for more outreach activities. The scientists are working on lots of different and exciting things. Here are just a few taking part: Abdullah Iqbal, who is repairing spinal cords 🪢 Angela Mwape, who gives off ‘positive vibes mostly’ 🎉 Georgia-Ann Carter, an anime-loving cognitive neuroscientist 🧠 Take a look at all the scientists taking part > Teachers – find out more and take part > You can see where the scientists are from on the map below:

In February 2021, the Purple Zone ran for 4 weeks. The activity was all about science, featuring 24 scientists from a broad range of fields. 867 students logged in, taking part in over 65 live chats and sending 150 questions to the scientists. During the activity, students voted for their favourite scientist. 100 votes were cast, and the winner was Amelia Gilio. I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here is connecting school students with real scientists throughout Autumn 2020.

Between the 2nd – 27th November we’ll be running the Health Zone, Physics Zone, Medical Research Zone, and Psychology Zone.

Elsewhere, there is a Space Zone for I’m an Engineer, and a General Science Zone in I’m a Scientist Ireland!

After every event we ask the winning scientists to write a short post to be sent to all the students who took part in the zone. It’s the perfect way for the scientists to reflect on all the engagement of the previous weeks, thank all the students for voting for them, and talk about how they plan to use their £500 prize money.
