Who’s taking part this May?

Throughout May 2021, students can connect with scientists in the Orange Zone. Students can Ask questions, Chat to them, and Vote for their favourite to win a £500 prize for more outreach activities. The Zone features over 30 scientists, each working something different and exciting things. Here are just a few taking part: Yirui Jiang, who is “trying to bring the world of Harry Potter into our daily life!” 🧙‍♀️ Jordan Bestwick, who investigates the diets of dinosaurs 🦖 Jessica Pimlott, trying to save the world by making big batteries to store renewable energy 🌍 Take a look at all the scientists taking part ❯ Teachers: Find out more and sign up for May ❯ You can see where the scientists are from on the map below:

A word from the Red Zone winner 🍾🎉

The Red Zone ran for 3 weeks in April 2021. It featured 28 scientists working in lots of different fields, from neuroscience, to pharmacology, to condensed matter physics. 725 students from across the UK logged in to connect with the scientists. During the Zone, students voted for their favourite scientist. At the end, the scientist with the most votes was Kip Heath. As winner, she gets £500 to spend on further public engagement projects. March 2021 winners 🥇

In March 2021, we ran 3 Zones in I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here.

Each ran for 4 weeks, from 1 to 26 March.

Throughout the month students voted for their favourite scientist. At the end of each Zone, the scientist with the most votes was crowned the winner. They will receive £500 to spend on further public engagement activities.


The Pink Zone was part-funded by the Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC).

It featured 27 scientists from a broad range of fields. 5 of these were either funded by STFC, or worked at, or used data from, an STFC facility.

🔴 Who’s in the Red Zone?

February’s winner! 🏆

In February 2021, the Purple Zone ran for 4 weeks. The activity was all about science, featuring 24 scientists from a broad range of fields. 867 students logged in, taking part in over 65 live chats and sending 150 questions to the scientists. During the activity, students voted for their favourite scientist. 100 votes were cast, and the winner was Amelia Gilio. November’s online STEM engagement activities from I’m a Scientist

I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here is connecting school students with real scientists throughout Autumn 2020.

Between the 2nd – 27th November we’ll be running the Health Zone, Physics Zone, Medical Research Zone, and Psychology Zone.

Elsewhere, there is a Space Zone for I’m an Engineer, and a General Science Zone in I’m a Scientist Ireland!
