I’m a Scientist – Get Me on the Radio! – evaluation

We’re constantly trying out new things in I’m a Scientist. When Radio Cardiff asked if they could get involved by producing a radio programme during the event featuring one of the zones in March 2012 we thought it would be a great idea and good experience for the scientists. So we said ‘why not‘? Naturally it wasn’t quite as simple as that. There were other questions to consider too. Which scientists would take part? 5 scientists from the Selenium Zone – Vicky, Ken, John, Jarvist & Indi. Would it be live or pre-recorded? Both! Pre-recorded profiles of each scientist and a live broadcast for scientists to answer questions on the spot, in a Science Question Time style session. When would it be broadcast? On Rhys’s (former IAS contestant and Radio Cardiff presenter) weekly science and technology Pythagoras’ Trousers during the 2 weeks of I’m a Scientist. Would there be voting … Continue reading

Next event: November 2012

This Autumn we’re running I’m a Scientist from 12th – 23rd November. There will be 3 zones. A Cancer Zone (November becomes ‘Movember‘ as men grow excellent moustaches to raise awareness of men’s health, specifically cancers) and two more zones that we want to fit in with the topics you are teaching at the time. We want your suggestions for what zones to run. What will you be teaching your students in November? Let us know here: www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1017914/What-topics-will-you-be-teaching-this-November Next week, once we’ve had your suggestions, we’ll post the results here, and start recruiting scientists working in those areas. This event is just for teachers who’ve taken part before. And we’re doing things a little differently. Teachers will be able to use their existing username and password. Students will register online on a unique page created for each teacher. There won’t be any printed teacher packs. No fiddly access codes. No … Continue reading

I’m a Scientist Live – evaluation

We like to experiment with the I’m a Scientist brand. In the last 12 months we have adapted the site to accommodate unlimited number of scientists in a zone, we’ve run In the Zone across a 12 week period and opened it up to the general public with the GM Food zone. Yesterday show another variation when we took the show live in front of an audience. Thanks to the boundless energy and eternal optimism of Rhys Phillips a former IAS participant we agreed to let him use the format for the Cardiff Science Festival. Sunday 15th July 2012 at 5pm on the Glanfa stage in the foyer of the Wales Millenium Centre was scheduled. A quick email out to scientists who had applied to take part in IAS resulted in 6 scientists volunteering to take part. Dr Mark Lewney was roped into MC’ing the session. We were given a … Continue reading

The ‘Amsterdam’ student winners are…

After a busy 2 weeks we want to say a big well done to the student zone winners from I’m a Scientist from June 11th – 25th. We asked moderators and scientists to recommend students in each zone who asked great questions or engaged really well in the Live Chats, or even left some thought provoking comments. The winner in each zone gets a £20 WH Smiths voucher and a certificate. We’ve also listed a few runners up in each zone who we thought participated really well. Thanks to all the students who took part. You asked some great questions and there were some fabulous live chats, from the deep and thought provoking to the more lively where you really challenged the scientists (and their typing skills). So well done to: Animal Behaviour Winner: emily72, Loreto Grammar School – for asking lots of thoughtful science based questions Runners up: lucyluvslemurs, … Continue reading
