šŸ”Ž Iā€™m a Scientist and the CHRISTMAS LECTURES

The Royal Institution has partnered with I’m a Scientist to run Chats based on this year’s CHRISTMAS LECTURES theme, The Truth About Food.

Take part in Chats, alongside lecture contributors, where school students from across the UK can ask you about your work and explore our relationship with food.

The Chats will take place from January to July 2025, but you can join in as and when it suits you. Let us know your availability and weā€™ll arrange the rest.

The Royal Institution supports Iā€™m a Scientist, Get me out of here.

The Royal Institution is dedicated to connecting people with the world of science and inspiring them to think more deeply about science and its place in our lives.

This yearā€™s CHRISTMAS LECTURES, supported by CGI, are taking a deep dive into The Truth About Food.

Iā€™m a Scientist is an enjoyable, effective, student-led engagement activity. Based online and text-only, itā€™s easy to connect with classes across the UK, wherever you are. Thereā€™s no preparation or travel time, all you need is a web browser!

This yearā€™s CHRISTMAS LECTURES theme is The Truth About Food. Such a wide-reaching topic makes way for scientists in a huge variety of fields to get involved.

Anyone in a role related to food, our relationship with it, where it comes from, or how it affects us is welcome to apply.

  • You could be a health professional working on nutrition or public health
  • Maybe youā€™re a biochemist looking at whatā€™s in our food, a microbiologist studying the gut microbiome, or an evolutionary biologist researching how our digestive system evolves
  • You might be in the food production industry, anywhere from farming and animal health to ensuring the safety and quality of our food
  • The list goes on! We encourage anyone who thinks they have something to add to this topic to sign up

All those working in industry, academia, or the public sector are welcome, whether youā€™re a researcher, technician, apprentice, or in roles like comms or management.

By taking part, you get to:

  • Show school students real-world applications of their learning and inspire the next generation in STEM
  • Answer studentsā€™ questions about your work
  • Improve your communication skills and gain experience of public engagement in a flexible and enjoyable way
  • Access extra support through the Iā€™m a Scientist Academy

How does it work?

  • Itā€™s all online and text-only (no audio or video), all you need is a web browser
  • Engage as much or as little as youā€™d like, just let us know when and how often youā€™d like to take part – the Iā€™m a Scientist team will take care of the logistics
    • You can focus on inspiring students without needing to plan events or travel to schools
    • All of the time you spend on Iā€™m a Scientist will be spent connecting with students
