🦿 Engage school students with Physics and Engineering in Medicine

Connect with school students from across the UK with I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here!

It’s all online and text-only (no audio or video). All you need is a web browser.

You should expect to spend an average of an hour and a half per month engaging with students across the academic year. The activity is flexible and works around your schedule – join in at the times that suit you.

You’ll retain control over your availability: block off days when you can’t take part, set the number of chats you can manage per week – we’ll arrange the rest.

The IPEM supports I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here.

IPEM is the Learned Society and professional organisation for physicists, clinical and biomedical engineers and technologists working in medicine and biology.

Healthcare is one of the most useful areas you can apply physics and engineering to and the NHS is the largest employer of scientists in the UK.

Physics and engineering principles have contributed to the development of every single medical device that is used in hospitals from simple blood-pressure monitors to sophisticated MRI machines.

You get to:

  • Answer students’ questions about working in medical physics and engineering
  • Chat with students in text-only moderated chats
  • Compete against fellow scientists to win students votes (you could win ÂŁ500 for more engagement work)

By taking part, you can:

  • Inspire the next generation in STEM
  • Support school students to see the real-world applications of their learning
  • Improve your communication skills
  • Gain experience of public engagement in a flexible and enjoyable way
  • Get access to the I’m a Scientist Academy

How does I’m a Scientist meet IPEM’s outreach and EDI requirements

  • Engages students who don’t get many opportunities to meet scientists in face to face events.
  • Being online, it can access hard-to-reach schools, that are under-served by outreach opportunities
  • I’m a Scientist is focused on state schools first
  • It works for everyone including neurodivergent users
