📢 January to July 2024 Activity Report
From January to July 2024, we introduced a new, flexible format for I’m a Scientist.
Teachers could choose a theme that fit their curriculum, but the discussions remained entirely student-led.

In celebration of Earth Day, we ran a series of themed Chats to get people talking about environmental issues and climate change.
Chats connected students with scientists developing and using technologies to help solve the climate crisis.
They discussed the environment, plastics, climate change, and the role of scientific research in addressing these challenges.
Our British Science Week 2024 event has come to a close, and what a week it was! Over 5 days, 68 schools engaged in 191 Chats, exchanging an impressive 63,023 lines of Chat. With so much going on, it’s hard to narrow down the highlights, but we’ve rounded up some of the mods’ favourite moments to share with you.
The diversity of participants made the week special. 246 scientists took part, each with unique careers and stories. Careers were a hot topic among students, from those with clear goals to others seeking tips on where to start. Continue reading
Computer Science can seem abstract to students. It’s often hard to see the relevance of their studies in the wider world, or to imagine themselves using computer science in a career. Connect your KS3 students with computer scientists in 30-minute, text-based Chats this March and beyond. Thanks to the support from the NCCE, you can book a Computer Science-themed Chat for your students from Monday 18 March 2024. You need an account to request a Chat: Sign up here ❯ Students will: “When students are engaged and start to see the real life impact of a subject, they’re more enthusiastic about it – I noticed an increased motivation to learn following I’m a Scientist.” – Emily Tulloch, science teacher. The project supports your students’ computer science capital. By connecting with people in diverse computing roles, students can see themselves in those careers and understand that STEM is ‘for them’. Find … Continue reading
Students are preparing for the world of work. Part of that preparation is to know more about being a member of a professional body and what that looks like.
Between Monday 18 and Thursday 22 March your students can get involved in our Professional Bodies Week.
Get your students ready for the Great Science Share by connecting them with a diverse range of scientists using research skills similar to them. During the activity they’ll: You need an account to request a Chat. Request here ❯
This year the Royal Institution’s CHRISTMAS LECTURES are all about Artificial Intelligence – a game-changer in our digital world.
AI is already in our lives. School students play online games with AI NPCs, or use TikTok or Snapchat augmented reality effects (but hopefully don’t ask Chat GPT to do their homework).
Join the Teacher Webinar on Thursday 26 October between 12.30pm and 1pm. Get a better understanding of the I’m a… programme, including our flagship activity I’m a Scientist, and explore the benefits to your local schools’ careers programme.
During this webinar, I’ll be:
This British Science Week, I’m a Scientist is giving students a chance to connect with scientists outside of their booked Chats.
From Monday to Thursday on the week commencing Monday 13 March, students can attend lunchtime open Chats.
