Thank you to everyone who joined us for Green Careers Week this year! Over the week, students connected with scientists working in a wide range of roles, from climate research to food production, materials science, and space exploration.
📊 By the numbers
Over 250 students from Years 7 to 13 joined across 16 Chats. 6 schools took part, from the west coast of Scotland to Buckinghamshire, even as far as Nantes, France. They connected with 44 different scientists. Over half of those scientists attended more than one Chat, including Mimi and Daniel who joined 5 each!
A special mention goes to Stranraer Academy, where 7 teachers ran a total of 9 Chats across three days. They engaged the whole of Year 8 in conversations with an impressive 34 different scientists.
💬 In the Chats
Students from Appleby Grammar School chatted with people like plant pathologists, synthetic chemists, and environmental safety scientists about their own roles and areas they find difficult, and heard that “you don’t have to be an expert in everything!”

In just one Chat, Hanley Castle students explored how chemistry, physics, biology, and more can all contribute to a greener future. Some students talked with Georgia about sustainable materials, others with Scott about geoscience. At the same time, very different conversations with Freya, Liz, and Niamh focused on energy use, food safety, and even space.
🌍 “How does your job help the world?”
Students were curious about the impact of the work these scientists do. The range of answers they got shows just how diverse green careers can be. Here are just a few examples:

Each Chat highlighted that there’s no single route into a green career. They showed the value of the skills students are developing and how they can open doors to roles that help tackle global challenges.
🎓 Teachers, you can book an activity for your class below, with a choice of themes like Environment or Sustainability:
