Our busiest time of the year, British Science Week (10 to 14 March), is just around the corner. With over 100 Chats under her belt, several of them during last year’s British Science Week, scientist Kip knows her stuff! Here are her top tips:

2. Start with a question 🤔
I find that students are more engaged when they view talking to us as a 2-way conversation. Sometimes it can take a group a little while to get going, and I have found that asking them if they have any questions can be helpful to start that momentum.
I will also ask them questions in reply to a question they have asked me. Like if they want to know my opinion on something I might ask them their opinion too. This helps me get a better idea of what exactly the student is interested in.
3. Reply at the students’ level 💬
I try to match my replies with the language they are using to make sure we are all on the same page. For example, I specialise in microbiology. To some students, it will already be obvious what this means. For others, I might add a simple explanation like ‘I specialise in microbiology which means I study small life’. Don’t worry though – students often let you know if they want more info or a different explanation.
I also find it helpful to keep up with the national school curriculum so that I know when the majority of students will have been introduced to particular concepts. There isn’t enough time to explain DNA replication if the students haven’t been taught DNA structure yet.

🖋️ About the author
Hi everyone! I’m Kip, a healthcare scientist who has worked in the NHS since I was 18! Healthcare scientists use STEM subjects to find and treat diseases and injuries in patients.
I’ve been taking part in I’m a Scientist since 2021 and find it a great way to chat with students about healthcare science careers. British Science Week is also Healthcare Science Week so it’s a particularly important time for me to connect with students. With so much going on, it’s great to have a few tricks up your sleeve to make the most of it!

Got any more top tips? Let the team know! You can Chat with the I’m a Scientist team throughout British Science Week by popping along to the ‘Chat to us’ Chat, open on the Chat page from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM each day. The team will be there to support you with any issues, or if you just want a friendly chat.
