I’m a Scientist for Nuffield Placement teachers

This March students in Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Swindon, West of England, Somerset & Dorset can talk with 5 scientists at nearby universities who are offering Nuffield Research Placements this summer.

I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here! is an online project and we’re partnering with the local Nuffield regional coordinator to run a zone specially for students to talk with scientists running Nuffield placements.

How does it link with Nuffield placements?

It’s a chance for your students to better understand what a placement involves. They’ll ‘meet’ some of the scientists who are offering placements at their universities this summer, find out about the type of research they’re doing, and the kind of work a summer placement could involve.

Can all students take part?

Yes! For students not applying for a summer placement, it’s a chance to ask a real scientists anything they like. From the topics they’re learning about in class, to questions about the scientists themselves.

How does it work?

The Barium Zone (the zones are named after elements) will run from Monday 10th – Friday 21st March. During these 2 weeks your students log into imascientist.org.uk with their own username and password, read the profiles of the local scientists offering summer placements, and ask them any questions they want through the Q&A section of the site. You can also book half hour long live chats (etext, not video) with the scientists, or your students can join in lunchtime live chats open to all students in the zone.

Who can take part?

It’s just open to schools in the Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Swindon, West of England, Somerset and Dorset region and is completely free to take part. If your students then want to apply for a placement with one of the scientists in the zone, or others in the region, the deadline is a few weeks later on April 4th.

How to sign up

If you’re interested or would like more info, please email Rhona (the Nuffield placement coordinator) on nuffield@gocatalyst.co.uk or ring her on 0117 9671837 by Monday February 17th. She’ll then pass your name and email onto us at the I’m a Scientist team and we’ll email you with a teacher log in, and a link to registering your students online.
