Main funder: Wellcome Trust

I’m a Scientist is proud to be part-funded through a Society Award from the Wellcome Trust, the UK’s largest charity. Wellcome are dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health. They support the brightest minds in biomedical research and the medical humanities.

Wellcome’s public engagement grants are intended to promote interest, excitement and debate around science and society. So, thankfully, they part-fund our fantastic event, which does all three so superlatively!

Zone sponsor: Institute of Physics (IOP)

The Institute of Physics sponsored the Space and Quantum zones in 2011, and we’re very excited to have them sponsoring 4 more zones in 2012. They are sponsoring Space and Quantum zones again in March 2012, after they successfully got students talking about all manner of exciting physics-related discussions, from cosmology and astrophysics to lasers and quantum computers.

The Institute of Physics is a scientific charity actively promoting development in physics through increasing the practice, understanding and application of physics. It has a worldwide membership of around 40,000 and is a leading communicator of physics-related science to all audiences, from specialists through to government and the general public.

Zone sponsor: Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

The STFC sponsored 2 zones in November 2011 – one themed zone, Subatomic, and the general Zinc Zone, with early career researchers. The STFC are sponsoring the Electromagnetic Zone in March 2012 and a Measurement Zone in I’m an Engineer.

The STFC, one of the seven Research Councils, keeps the UK at the forefront of international science. STFC draws on many aspects of science and engineering, working with academia and industry to share its expertise in materials science, space and ground-based astronomy technologies, laser science, microelectronics, wafer scale manufacturing, particle and nuclear physics, alternative energy production, radio communications and radar. STFC research addresses topics as fundamental as:

  • The birth of the universe to the solar system we live in
  • Understanding how the heavy elements are formed in the violent explosions of stars.
  • Is it possible to complete the ‘Standard Model’, so far physicists have detected all but one of the particles predicted by this theory, the Higgs particle.

Zone sponsor: Research Councils UK (RCUK) Energy Programme

The RCUK Energy Programme is excited to be sponsoring the Energy Zone in March 2012, for researchers funded by the Energy Programme.

The RCUK Energy programme is providing research towards low-carbon, safe, secure energy supplies for the future. The Energy Programme is led by EPSRC and also brings together work of BBSRC, ESRC, NERC and STFC.

Research Councils UK is the strategic partnership between the seven UK Research Councils. Each year the Research Councils invest around £3 billion in research covering the full spectrum of academic disciplines, working to the second strand of our public engagement with research strategy to ‘inspire young people’.

Zone sponsor: The Physiological Society

The Physiological Society is sponsoring the Sports Science Zone in March 2012, which will feature Society Members whose research looks at sports and exercise physiology.

Physiology is an essential discipline which seeks to understand how the human body works; the study of how cells, organs and muscles interact contributes crucial insight into sports performance. The Society brings together more than 3,000 scientists from over 60 countries, and since our foundation in 1876, our Members have made significant contributions to the knowledge of biological systems – many in the area of sports physiology.

The Physiological Society is committed to engaging with public audiences. Sponsoring I’m A Scientist meets many of our aims for outreach, including inspiring younger people to study physiology. We fund gold-standard public engagement projects like IAS through our Public Engagement grants scheme.
