Student winners – November 2019

During the activity in November we asked the scientists and moderators to select the students who stood out for them: the students they thought asked the best questions, or engaged most in the live chats.

Well done to all of the student winners, and everyone who took part. There were so many interesting questions, and comments, but there is only one voucher to be won in each zone. So, for fantastic engagement during the event, for posting brilliant questions and comments, the student winners below will each receive a certificate and a gift voucher. Continue reading

Teacher information – Enquiry Zone

The Enquiry Zone is a chance for primary school students to help design and carry out their own research project. It gives students ownership over research and an input into all stages of the project, helping them gain a real insight into how science works. Citizen Science is research that members of the public who are not professional scientists help to conduct, often by collecting or analysing data. This means that, in many cases, much more can be achieved than would be possible in a lab without the input of citizen scientists First, in the online ‘Design stage’, six psychologists will propose an idea for a ‘Citizen Science’ research project they can carry out with the help of your students. Over two weeks you and your class will help the psychologists make their ideas better. Students will: Your class gets two Live CHATS, one in each week, to allow students to get … Continue reading

New Debate Kit – Unisex Toilets

Our latest science Debate Kit, funded by the Royal Institution and Lloyd’s Register Foundation, asks the question: Should schools make all their toilets unisex?

Covering relevant topics such as biological sex, gender and societal expectations, this Debate Kit helps students explore what gender means to them and others. The Kit includes eight characters with different viewpoints to encourage a balanced discussion around the question, which many schools already find themselves asking.

The kit provides all you need to run a debate around unisex toilets and to help them understand the differences between one’s biological sex and gender identity. The structure shows students how to build a discussion and back up their opinions with facts. Continue reading
